the ghosts dance, by jack phillips lowe

Thought I saw my dad at Walmart.
Big as life, in crewcut and khakis.
He was in the liquor department,
buying a bottle of Fireball Whisky.
Then I remembered—
Dad’s been dead for 12 years
and always favored gin
when he was not not drinking.

Then I thought
of how Covid-isolation
can cause depression
and how depression
can make the ghosts dance.

So to break up the party,
I bought myself
an antidepressant—
a bottle of Fireball Whisky.
